SIGSAND Symposia

The first two symposia were informal meetings held in Miami , Florida , in March 2002 and April 2003. Attendees were researchers in the area of Systems Analysis and Design (SA&D) who considered the state of research in this area. Attendees were united in the beliefs that SA&D lies in the ‘core’ of the Information Systems discipline; that as a consequence, research examining all aspects of SA&D should be an integral part of IS research; and that despite its centrality to the IS field and potential contribution to both theory and practice, research in this area had received comparatively little attention in leading IS journals. Since then, SIGSAND has tried to promote research in the area and several journal articles have resulted from interactions begun at SIGSAND meetings.

The Third Symposium on Research in Systems Analysis and Design was held on June 12 and 13, 2004 at St. John's in Canada . This was the first formal event supported by SIGSAND.  Several papers were presented in the symposium, the officers were elected, special issues for journals were discussed, and the attendees approved the senior advisory board.

The Symposiums on Research in Systems Analysis and Design have the objective of promoting and developing high quality research on all issues related to systems analysis and design. The Symposium is based on the premise that, despite the fact that systems analysis and design lie at the core of the Information Systems discipline, there is a notable shortage of research on these topics in the leading research journals in Information Systems.

SIGSAND symposia have been held in 2005 in Cincinnati (Fourth Symposium), OH and in 2006 in Vancouver, Canada (Fifth Symposium). They are usually held in May, registration is free and the emphasis is on discussing nascent research in a close, collegial atmosphere. Attendance is usually limited to around 30 researchers. The Sixth Symposium was held in Tulsa, OK in May 2007. The Seventh Symposium was held in Utah, in May 2008. The Eighth Symposium will be held in May 2009 in Richmond, VA.
